Summary of story from Pink News, August 23, 2011

A Ugandan gay rights activist who faces death threats in her home country has been allowed entry to the UK to speak at a Pride rally in Northern Ireland.

After previously being denied a visa (see WVoN story), Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera will now talk at the rally in Derry .

Nabagesera was one of the list of gay people whose names, addresses and photos were published in an article in Uganda’s Rolling Stone ‘newspaper’, which also called for them to be hanged.

Her colleague David Kato was murdered after the paper was published.

Despite this ongoing threat to her life, Nabagesera has continued to speak out for LGBT people in Uganda. In 2011 she won the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders.

WVoN comment: A remarkable woman and welcome news that the UK did the right thing and granted a visa in the end.

  1. I’m glad to hear she got her visa! I hope she stays safe, she’s a far braver women than I.
