A new YouGov survey shows that women may not be sufficiently careful when deciding on which contraception to use.

According to the survey, half of the women using contraception have spent less than half an hour choosing which method to use – less time than they take to pick a new washing machine.

As a result, women may be basing their decisions on myths, half truths and gossip.

These include believing that the failure rate of the Pill is just 0.3 per cent – as it is on paper, but it is 8 per cent in real life as some women may forget to take it regularly –  or that implants can cause infertility.

There are more than 600 abortions every day in the UK and more than 40 per cent of pregnancies are unplanned although three out of four women are using some form of contraception when they get pregnant.

Women should spend more time getting better informed about the fifteen – free – different methods of contraception available to them in the UK, says Dr Tina Peers, consultant in contraception and sexual health at Surrey Primary Care Trust.
