Brothel in Warwick, UK, closed after immigration office raid
Summary of story from Coventry Telegraph, August 17, 2011
A brothel in Warwick, England was closed this week after two raids by the UK Border Agency, one year apart.
Officers first visited the flat in July last year, and found two Chinese women working as prostitutes. The women were arrested and received a caution.
A further tip-off was received this year suggesting that the women were still at the house. Men were reported as loitering around the premises and leaving at strange hours.
A second raid by immigration officials and officers from the West Midlands and Warwickshire police forces took place on August 3. The officers found two Chinese women.
The women denied working as prostitutes, claiming that they were on holiday.
Evidence gathered was used to apply for a closure order through the courts, which forbids entrance to the property by anyone other than the leaseholder for an initial period of three months. The order was granted on August 12.
Immigration checks on the women showed that both had the right to remain in the UK.
WVoN comment: I have included nothing about what happened to the women after the closure order was granted, because the article gave no further information.
There was nothing to indicate that the women received help after the second raid so that they would be able to support themselves in ways other than prostitution.
No suggestion was given that any men abusing these women were reprimanded by police.
Somehow this doesn’t feel like a success story.
As a single femaile living at in the area for 18 months,I along with many other residents we feel alot safer !
This was the first time the closure notice had been used in Warwickshire from the new law back in April 2010.
The men causing the nuisance were the ones hanging around outside up to 10 times a day, I can not tell you how frightening that was, so to us it is a success on this occasion
This is one small case but I am sure it is part of a much bigger picture .
Ten times a day! 🙁 I’m glad your area is safer for all now. Where did these men go, though?
Hi! I’m glad you feel safer now and in that sense, this was a success. What you describe sounds intimidating and I wouldn’t want that happening near my home.
I felt like I had to sound a slightly negative note at the end because although this has made your community safer, it hasn’t solved the problem, only transferred it elsewhere.
