Dar es Salaam hosts Gender Festival with a difference

Summary of story from The Citizen, September 13, 2011

The 2011 Gender Festival in Dar es Salaam will combine its annual call for gender equality with demands for a new constitution and the 50th anniversary of Tanzania’s independence.

The festival organisers, the Tanzania Gender NetWorking Programme (TGNP),  noted that the two topics were so important that they had to be included in the annual event.

“We thought that this occasion will provide an ample opportunity for participants to dwell on the two issues,” said TGNP executive director, Ms Usu Mallya.

A new constitution and the issue of independence have been under discussion for some time but their inclusion in the Gender Festival is significant because it takes the debate to the common people.

The theme of this year’s festival, currently under way, is land, labour and livelihood. Ms Mallya says these issues affect the daily lives of many marginalised people.

“Until now we are still witnessing a few people taking a lot of public resources for their personal gains while the majority, who were supposed to be served by the resources, remain with nothing,” she said.
