Chloe Smith new economic secretary to the Treasury

Chloe Smith has been appointed economic secretary to the Treasury following the resignation of the UK’s defence secretary Liam Fox.

Ms Smith, Member of Parliament for Norwich North (see WVoN story), will take over from Justine Greening who has been promoted to transport secretary in the current reshuffle in which erstwhile transport secretary Philip Hammond was moved to be Minister of Defence.

The post of economic secretary is the fifth most senior at the Treasury, and 29-year-old Ms Smith will be responsible for a range of issues, including the EU Budget, taxation of transport, North Sea oil and child poverty.

A York University graduate and member of the Tory Reform Group, she worked as a consultant for accountancy firm Deloitte until she was elected to Parliament in 2009 aged 27.
