Women make up almost half the new UK shadow cabinet announced this morning by the leader of the opposition, Ed Miliband.

It now features 11 women out of a total of 27.

Appointments include 32-year-old Rachel Reeves, who was elected in last year’s general election and who has become shadow Treasury chief secretary.

She replaces Angela Eagle who is now shadow leader of the House of Commons.

Harriet Harman moves from international development to culture, media and sport, while Yvette Cooper remains as shadow home secretary while also carrying the equalities brief.

Former GMTV presenter Gloria de Piero, MP for Ashfield in Nottinghamshire, was expected to be among those due to be promoted by Miliband, but missed out in the end.

You can read the full line up here, as well as the list of changes here.

I’d definitely vote for Harriet Harman at Ministery of Culture, Media and Sport – who knows, she might even require lads mags to uphold the law rather than undermine it when it comes to domestic violence and rape.
