Summary of story from RFE/RL, October 6, 2011

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has criticised the United Nations Security Council for failing to pass a resolution condemning Syria’s crackdown on unarmed protesters.

On a visit to the Dominican Republic, Ms Clinton said that the Council had “abrogated its responsibility – the responsibility to protect international peace and the security of civilians.”

The resolution would have threatened action against the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad, but was vetoed by Russia and China. Brazil, India, Lebanon and South Africa abstained.

UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon also criticised the failure saying that the United Nations had a “moral obligation” to prevent further bloodshed in this “dangerous crisis”.

According to UN statistics, over 2,700 people have been killed in Syria since the protest movement there began in earnest in March.
