Summary of story from Huffington Post UK, October 18, 2011

As the UK celebrated its second Anti-Slavery Day this Tuesday, we were reminded of how slavery is still present in our modern world.

The British Government has sent a clear message to those criminal networks involved in trafficking: the UK will not tolerate this crime, but will pursue traffickers and bring them to justice.

The UK has also signed up to international conventions against trafficking, and published their own national strategy in July.

They are creating the National Crime Agency, which they hope will further able them to draw together general law enforcement and border policing to share intelligence and to mount joint operations.

This week, the Home Office and Department of Education will publish guidance for local authorities and the police on, for example, how to report potential victims and how to recognise the key indicators of trafficking.

Charity and voluntary organisations are regarded as the best sources to provide the UK government with information from the ground.

The private sector are also playing a part. Virgin Atlantic launched a new initiative yesterday, where they provide cabin crew with training to help them spot potential traffickers and victims.

Damian Green, the UK’s Immigration Minister, says that Anti-Slavery Day is a chance for everyone to reflect on the plight of those who fall victim to this terrible crime, and for us to remind ourselves of the role we can all play in stopping it.

Would be a good idea to post ads in the men’s media to remind potential customers of trafficked girls that this is rape, not sex.
