Women come forward for HIV tests after UK man jailed

Summary of story from BBC News, October 7, 2011

After an appeal to potential victims of a Middlesbrough man who infected a lover with HIV, police report that a small number of women have come forward and asked to be tested.

Simon McClure, a married 38-year-old, was jailed for inflicting grievous bodily harm on a woman with whom he had unprotected sex, despite knowing he had the virus.

His victim only discovered she was infected after later becoming pregnant.

Teesside Crown Court heard how McClure was diagnosed with the virus in 2006, after returning to the UK from Thailand.

The court heard that he may have had sex with hundreds of women since then, including prostitutes, ignoring clear advice from doctors not to have unprotected sex.

McClure was jailed for two years and eight months, and Judge Howard Crowson, passing sentence, told him his risk-taking was pre-meditated.
