Women march in Yemen

Summary of story from CNN, October 17, 2011

Thousands of women have demonstrated in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, to demand UN intervention in the  country’s ongoing unrest.

The protests come amidst news of the first woman in Yemen to be killed in the uprising;  it is alleged that a government sniper shot and killed 20 year old Aziza Othman Kaleb during earlier protests in the city of Taiz (see WVoN story).

The women called for sanctions against President Ali Abdullah Saleh and asked that he be tried by the International Criminal Court.

Activist Atiaf Alwazir called the shooting of a woman “a sign that the government security forces will not really stop shooting, even if there are women.”
