Former beauty queen jailed in Argentina for drug smuggling

Angie Sanclemente Valencia, a former Colombian beauty queen was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison by a court in Argentina this week for attempting to smuggle cocaine to Europe.

Dubbed the “Narco Queen” by the Argentine media,Valencia was accused of persuading “pretty young women” to smuggle drugs on first-class flights.

The 31-year-old model initially denied all the charges before admitting that she made a few calls on behalf of her Argentinian fiance, Nicholas Gualco.

Valencia was arrested in May, 2010 from a youth hostel in the fashionable Palermo neighborhood in the Argentine capital, where she was living under a false identity.

Police began investigating her after a 21-year-old was arrested in December 2009 while attempting to board a plane to Cancun with 55 kilograms of cocaine in her luggage. It led to the arrest of six more alleged gang members, including Gualco.
