Feminist Times website launched

website launch, feminist times, sarah grahamLaunch of eagerly awaited Feminist Times website.

By Sarah Graham, editorial assistant at Feminist Times.

Feminist Times is a new and unique magazine, website and membership campaigning group, founded by Charlotte Raven. I started working with Charlotte on the project in May; it’s been an exciting, if turbulent, process so far and it’s great to finally see the website go live.

Launched on 3 October, Feminist Times is an alternative women’s magazine, with a focus on “Life Not Lifestyle”.  Like a feminist Private Eye, the editorial content combines mordantly witty humour and satire with serious in-depth analyses of the complexities of modern femininity and women’s issues.

It is, without doubt, an ambitious project: a non-profit company, committed to paying contributors fairly. The magazine and free to access website will be free from advertising and PR, instead funded entirely by donations and membership fees. Members pay what they can afford, from £5 to £111 per month, but all members receive the same: a subscription to the printed magazine (due to launch this winter), and access to a diverse range of members’ events.

As a mainstream feminist media platform, we want to represent the wonderful diversity of modern feminism – we already know we have a broad appeal because our membership ranges from teenagers to grandmothers.

Our content ranges from the silly and irreverent to the serious, surprising and at times provocative. I’m really proud of the diversity of our launch pieces: our Radical Agony Aunts, the first of Rachel Salvidge’s environment blogs, Nina Power’s essay on 3D feminism, and pieces on legal aid and sexual abuse, from grassroots activists in the North East and Birmingham respectively.

The launch was celebrated last night at the Restitution Ball, which our Founder Members were promised when they gave one-off donations to kick-start the whole project.

A launch party for all members is planned for 2 November, and the public vote for our first feminist campaign will launch in the next few weeks.

The website will be followed by a printed magazine, launching later this year, which will be available exclusively to members before being rolled out on general sale in early 2015.

Sarah Graham is editorial assistant at Feminist Times and a former co-editor with Women’s Views on News.
