England Women’s rugby team try for the top

It’s been 4 years since England and New Zealand faced each other in the world of women’s rugby and with the two teams preparing to meet in tonight’s final, fans of both teams are gearing up for a game to remember.

Tonight’s match will be the third time England has faced the New Zealand team – who haven’t lost a world cup match since 1994 – in a World Cup final, but with two previous defeats against the Zealanders, do we have what it takes this time to win?

Captain of the team, Catherine Spencer certainly hopes so. In fact, she’s bet her job on it.

The former sports centre officer manager quit her day job to focus on the World Cup tournament after four years in the post. Captain since 2007, Spencer might have reason to feel confident about Thursday’s match as she oversaw the team when we beat NZ last November at Twickenham for the first time in 8 years.

“If anyone wants to employ me in September, I’m open to offers,” Catherine quipped during an interview with the RFU.

And the Captain is not alone in her commitment. Centre Amy Scarratt has taken three months leave from the Metropolitan Police in the hope of scooping the World Cup this year.

The commitment of the England team may also be responsible for the unprecedented and growing numbers of followers of women’s rugby, which is now more popular amongst girls and women in the UK than it has ever been.

The RFU state that over 15,000 girls and women regularly play rugby in the UK, an increase of over 11,000 in the last 6 years according to Sky Sports. And if you’re tempted to join them, you can start by checking out the final tonight on Sky Sports.
