Summary of story from The Huffington Post, August 19, 2011

PETA, (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) the organisation which campaigns for the ethical treatment of animals, is launching a porn site to promote veganism.

The charity has previously employed celebrities to strip off and publicise their anti-fur campaign, and has also featured women using vegetables in erotic poses.

Now spokesperson Lindsay Rajt says the porn site will raise awareness of veganism – and that PETA will do whatever it takes to expose the cruel treatment of animals.

According to Ms Rajt, the will have enough adult content to qualify to be a XXX domain site but it will also have graphic images of animals.

WVoN comment: PETA’s attention-grabbing tactics have run into controversy before, with the charity accused of exploiting women.

A Facebook group was set up entitled Real Women Against Peta following an advert campaign likening obese women to whales and telling them to lose the blubber by converting to vegetarianism.

This new campaign re-opens the debate about exploitation v empowerment of women in the porn industry. And about the ethics of PETA’s  publicity strategies.

  1. I really don’t have a lot of time for PETA. I find their tactics repellent and their methods questionable.
