Women in Scotland urged to go for cervical cancer checks

Women in Scotland have been urged to go for “vital” checks for cervical cancer after figures showed a fall in the number of smear tests carried out.

Official figures showed NHS laboratories dealt with 415,497 cervical screening tests in 2009-10. The figure shows a drop of 8% – or about 35,000 – from the previous year when 450,522 of the tests were carried out.

Elspeth Atkinson, Macmillan Cancer Support’s director for Scotland, talking to the UKPA said: “It is absolutely vital that women continue to attend for screening every three years and they attend any follow-up appointments. Screening undoubtedly saves lives as abnormalities that are detected early can usually be treated successfully.”
