Girl with Dragon Tattoo movie inspires work with rape victims

Music Box Films, the US distributor for Stieg Larsson’s Millennium novels, have teamed up with the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) who are showing the films as part of their work to help support rape victims in colleges and rape crisis centres, reports abc news.

Despite some concerns about negative reactions to the graphic sexual violence depicted in the film, RAINN believe showings of the film will provoke discussion about the portrayal of the attacks in the film and also about the impact of such attacks on the victims.

Love her or be terrified of her, there’s no doubt that Lisbeth Salander is one of the most unusual and unprecedented female heroines in the history of fiction. Although obviously troubled, Salander refuses to passively accept her fate and negotiates the world firmly and unequivocally on her own terms. Larsson never fails to engage with the profound complexity of rape and sexual assault survivors and it seems like a fitting tribute for his work to be employed in this way.
