Massive cultural sensitivity programme needed to reduce sexual harassment

Experts in India have said that a massive cultural sensitivity programme is needed to reduce sexual harassment against women. The programme which would be focused on changing hearts and psyches would increase social awareness to ensure men and women were treated equally.

The subject was brought to light in a panel discussion on sexual offences which was shown on TV in India. Former minister of women and child development, Renuka Chaudhary, supports the idea, and has said it it vital for women not to be seen as ‘filth of the business by men’.

Veteran author and journalist, Madhu Tehran added, ‘It’s unfortunate that we educate people not to murder but do not teach them to respect women. The advertisements promote inferior status of women compared to men.’
