Summary of story from BBC, March 24, 2011

A man branded one of the most prolific and depraved sex attackers in Britain has been convicted of a string of assaults.

Dubbed the “Night Stalker”, Delroy Grant (53) raped and assaulted elderly victims over a period of 17 years in South London, Kent and Surrey.

Police say he was responsible for some of the most “awful and disturbing crimes” in Scotland Yard’s history.

Detectives have linked Grant to 203 separate surviving victims, but fear his actual number of victims could be as high as 600, as many may have died without reporting incidents.

Grant denied 29 charges against him, including rape and sexual assault, but was convicted despite desperate attempts to blame his wife (see WVoN story) and even his son for the offences, telling police: “Have you thought about my son Delroy Junior?”

The father of at least eight children and full-time carer for his wife who has multiple sclerosis, Grant targeted vulnerable elderly people in their homes at night.

He broke in using a crowbar and cut phone lines before assaulting his victims, many of whom were blind, deaf, or suffering from Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease.

Sentencing will occur today, which will result in a term that Judge Peter Rook said would be “very long indeed.”
