The story of DSK, the hotel maid and the physical evidence

The Dominique Strauss-Kahn case looks like it will just run and run.

For those of you living under a rock for the last ten days, DSK (as he is apparently affectionately known and which I’m using because it’s quicker than typing out his name) used to be the head of  the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

But today he is no longer the chief of anything because ten days or so ago, a hotel maid at the Sofitel in New York accused him of sexual assault and, as a result of the subsequent firestorm, he was forced to resign.

To recap briefly – DSK was in the bathroom of his hotel room when a maid came in to clean the room. She was, allegedly, then assaulted by him and forced to perform oral sex on him.

Although some commentators have thought it strange that a hotel maid should enter the room of such a powerful man on her own, I believe it does happen. And in fact, I used to be a chambermaid myself many years ago and always cleaned the rooms on my own.

Anyway, I digress. The scene changes and we’re at the airport in New York (JFK to be precise) and DSK  is on a plane that’s headed for France.

Now at this point, I want to get one thing quite clear. You are not to read anything into the fact he was already at the airport – he was not, repeat not, trying to leave the country, okay?

Anyway, where was I? Oh, yes, DSK was in his first class seat on an Air France plane which was about to take off when he was arrested and Brought To Justice.

Initially  he denied that anything had happened. Then presumably someone pointed out to him that there might be evidence at the scene if he was telling a few porkies. Or (even more likely) there might be evidence on the poor old maid.

So then there was a rumour that he was going to argue it was consensual. But no longer, methinks.

Because …. drum roll …..

Today, Bloomberg (and a host of other media organisations, no doubt) report blood has been found at the scene which sorta buries the consensual argument.

And there’s other physical evidence as well, according to these latest news reports, including semen and a cut on the defendant’s back which, as Bloomberg so subtly put it “suggest contact between the accuser, a 32-year-old West African immigrant and Strauss-Kahn, 62”.

Bloomberg also reports that: “News organizations including the Wall Street Journal have reported that a DNA sample from Strauss-Kahn matched semen found on the maid’s shirt.

“The Associated Press reported carpet samples taken from the room may contain semen traces and blood was found on the sheets.

“Fox News said Strauss-Kahn cut his back on a piece of furniture in the room during a struggle with the victim, who told him that she didn’t want to have sex with him. All the reports cited unidentified sources”.

So, my conclusion? The physical evidence, if true (and I’m not suggesting for a moment that it is), would suggest that this man is in deep shit.

You would think so, and yet watch the media rally round as it has in France and begin villifying the woman until no jury in the world will believe a word she says or what the physical evidence backs up … do I sound bitter and angry? … Oh well, just a bit!
