Public sector workers strike over budget cuts

Summary of story from BBC News, October 5, 2011

Thousands of health and education workers throughout Northern Ireland have joined picket lines today in a 24-hour strike to protest against budget cuts.

The action by members of the public service union, Unison, will mean the cancellation of about 1000 medical procedures and a range of other health care services.

Health Minister Edward Poots has spoken out against the action, saying that it is “not good enough” that so many operations would be disrupted and that the strike was “avoidable and unnecessary”.

But Patricia McKeown, regional secretary of Unison, said that the budget cuts situation was “critical” and action needs to be taken. She said that most of the workers would be striking for the first time in their lives.
