Support needed for female candidates says Liberian minister

The Minister of Gender Development in Liberia, Varblah Gayflor, has called for increased support to female candidates standing for the 2011 elections and subsequent national elections.

She made the call recently at a journalism ethics conference convened by the Press Union of Liberia (PUL).

Speaking through a Gender Ministry representative at the conference, the minister said: “let there be financial, logistical and moral support to female aspirants in a bid to enable them to fully participate in national political process.”

She also called for what she referred to as “increased motivation for more female aspirants in the presidential and legislative elections during the pending October and future elections.”

She stated that there should be “equally increased awareness for female electorate to exercise their political franchise by going to the polls to vote.”
