US Republican candidate Herman Cain suspends campaign

Summary of story from TIME, December 3, 2011

US Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain has announced that he is suspending his campaign for nomination.

Speaking at what was scheduled to be the opening of his campaign headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, Cain said the decision was due to “the continued distraction, the continued hurt caused on me and my family.”

Cain, former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, has denied allegations of sexual harassment and a 13-year affair (see WVoN coverage) and accused the media of spreading “false accusations”.

But he said his decision to suspend the campaign did not mean he was leaving public life.

“The pundits would like for me to shut up, drop out… I am not going to be silenced and I am not going away.”
