Recession stress takes toll on skin

Stress caused by the lingering economic gloom is playing havoc with women’s skin, a poll has revealed.

Many women blame a lack of sleep caused by anxiety over job fears and the rising cost of living for spots and dry, itchy skin conditions.

Research suggests that a quarter of all adults will have a mental health problem, such as depression or anxiety, at some point in their lives.

One in 20 of them has even taken a day off sick because of skin problems caused by recession stress.

And those that do make it into the office don’t escape either. Nearly half of them complain that the air conditioning in their workplace aggravates their skin.

A spokeswoman for Simple skin care, which commissioned the study, said: “Suffering from troublesome skin, whatever the condition can be really upsetting for women. But when it starts affecting a person’s confidence and their day to day working life, it’s time to act.”

“Our skin is the body’s largest organ, so it’s vital we look after it.”

A recent survey estimated that during 2008 and 2009, over 400,000 people in Britain experienced work-related stress that was making them unwell.  One in six workers think their job is stressful.
